Voice Recital Features 3 WHS Seniors

Local vocal coach said she has 'a ton of pride watching them.'

As Westborough vocal coach Julie Krugman prepares the end-of-year recital for her students, she is especially proud of the three seniors who are moving on to college. Mara Frumkin, Kate Barrette and Chloe Reske will join 17 others in a free public performance.

“They are going off to college and focusing on the arts. It’s a big decision,” said Krugman. “[College] is an important time. When you are in your 20s, you can afford to pursue your dreams.”

Mara Frumkin, 17, has been singing since eighth grade. She is heading off to Texas Christian University in Fort Worth this fall. She plans to study theater and acting. “I hope to do musical theater, as well,” she said. “I want to keep performing. I want to inspire little kids to do theater.”

Eighteen-year-old Kate Barrette said she has been singing forever. “I started theater with the Westborough Players Club when I was eight.” Off to Roger Williams University to study theater, Barrette said she is not sure yet what she will do with her future. “I know I want to perform in some capacity.”

Senior Chloe Reske said she has been singing “since I could talk.” She started doing musicals in fifth grade and sang in her church choir. “And I’m always singing in the shower,” she laughed.

While Reske is not sure what she will study when she begins her freshman year this fall at Tufts University, she said her future “definitely” will include music.

“I really have no idea [what my plans are for the future],” she said. “I live in the moment.”

The three seniors took turns performing during the Saturday, May 12, recital rehearsal. Krugman, who opened her Westborough studio in 2009, beamed as she listened to each of her students perform. The youngest of the group are two sixth grade girls, Krugman said, though she normally begins coaching students in the seventh grade.

“My hope is that these students get confidence — confidence in themselves and their abilities,” she said.

Her classes are offered weekday afternoons and on Saturdays. Most of her students take a weekly class. Krugman said she works with the Fine Arts Department of the in helping students prepare for school musicals, talent shows and coffee house performances.

The recital is open to the public and features 20 of Krugman’s 22 students. The program begins at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 13 in the on West Main Street.

Krugman said, “I love them all so much in so many ways. I just have a ton of pride watching them.”
