WESTBOROUGH GIRLSCOUT BROWNIES TAKE ACTION TO SAFEGUARD THE BEES
Saving bees at the local level, State Bee Inspector Ken Warchol visits Westborough
“We are very worried about the fate of bees. They are dying because people are using herbicides and pesticides. We would like to do something to help..."
– A letter sent from Westborough Girl Scout troop #64520 to the Westborough Conservation Committee, May 2016.
With the bee population declining at an alarming rate, Westborough Brownies from troop #64520, are embarking on a journey to help save the bees - and prevent the vanishing of fruits, vegetables, and flowers, in addition to many other unseen disastrous effects on the ecosystem. The troop, comprised of seven-to-eight year olds, constructed individual Mason Bee Hives from wood and other organic materials to build a large Mason Bee Hotel, which they hope will be placed in one of the Westborough conservation Lands. Derek Saari, President of the Westborough Conversation Committee, invited the girls to present their project at the upcoming committee meeting on June 14, 2016. “Our goal is to raise awareness about the importance of saving the bees and how their protection directly relates to our food production. We hope this will have greater implications within our town,” said Nuray Wallace, leader of the troop.
