Middlesex Faculty Members Receive Honors for Online Courses

Middlesex Community College faculty members Denise Marchionda and John Smith were recognized as e-learning exemplars at the 10th annual Massachusetts Colleges Online (MCO) E-Learning Conference held recently at Bridgewater State University.

Marchionda and Smith received the MCO Course of Distinction (COD) Award for their online courses, which were selected from more than 2,600 courses offered through MCO, a consortium of the 15 Massachusetts community colleges and seven members of the state university system.

Marchionda’s online English course, “Crime and Punishment in Literature” was selected because of its structure and organization. “The Material is presented in a very concise, consistent, organized and easy-to-follow manner,” said Nancy Curll, MCC’s Manager of E-Learning. “Marchionda’s course has been used as a sample in online development training for some time and her example has been followed by many other trainees.”

Smith was recognized for his course, “Technical Mathematics/Physics.” “In this hybrid course, which combines online learning with traditional face-to-face learning, the course material is well structured and presented in a consistent manner,” said Curll. “Students are provided with a clear understanding of what will be provided online and exactly what is expected from them in the classroom. His attention to detail is exemplary.”

In addition to accepting their honors, Marchionda and Smith were invited to present their courses as part of the conference’s Best Practices Showcase.
