Known today chiefly for his surrender to the American forces at Saratoga, New York, in 1777, General John Burgoyne was one of the most interesting – and extraordinary – figures of the eighteenth century. In his book, Norman Poser provides a rounded biography, covering not only the Saratoga campaign but also elements of Burgoyne’s eventful life that have never been adequately explored. He paints a vivid portrait of General John Burgoyne, remembering him not only for his role in one of Britain’s worst military disasters but also as a brave, talented, humane man.
After retiring from a career in the finance industry and a second career as a law professor, Professor Poser turned to writing non-fiction books, focusing on 18thC. He wrote the only modern biography of Lord Mansfield, perhaps the greatest of all Anglo-American judges, which the Wall Street Journal called “a fascinating portrait.” Professor Poser also wrote Escape, an account of the Nazi invasion and occupation of Norway and Denmark in World War II. Professor Poser is a graduate, with honors, of Harvard College and Harvard Law School.

A new generation of stamp collecting “influencers” has gone online to create content for our hobby.On Monday, May 25, the Spellman Museum will be hosting an evening panel discussion with some of the top creators in this space, including museum curator Ken Flowers of “Ken’s Stamp Collection” and “That Stamp Guy”, Ryan Joneson. Ken and his guests will discuss why they create content, give tips to potential new creators and answer live questions from some of their viewers.This event is free with admission and begins at 6:30PM. It is part of the museum's participation in the Boston 2026 World Stamp Expo; shuttle service from the Expo to the museum is available.

Visit the magnificent and fascinating home of noted Loyalist Isaac Jones and his descendants. It's like stepping back in time!&nbsp;&nbsp;Free and family friendly! Come along and learn more about colonial life. You will see what it was like to live in the 18th and 19th century firsthand!

Here you will learn about six generations of the Jones family living in this house for 200 years and the unique role that the Tavern and Isaac Jones played during the Revolutionary War - including the visits from British Spies, Paul Revere’s men and a Weston Tea Party. See what it was like to live in the Colonial era - our museum is filled with hundreds of artifacts that belonged to the Jones family.
You can also visit our 2026 exhibit “Lost Liberties - Broken Promises” . This exhibit is sponsored by Mass Humanities and the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

Home of Loyalist Isaac Jones and 6 generations of his family

Step inside history at the Golden Ball Tavern Museum—a remarkable home built in 1768 where the drama of the American Revolution once unfolded. Built by Isaac Jones, a prominent citizen who famously shifted from Loyalist to Patriot, the Tavern became an unlikely hub of intrigue. In 1774 it was the scene of a violent ransacking known as the ‘Weston Tea Party’. During the winter of 1775, it served as a base for British spies, playing a role in the events that led to the march on Lexington and Concord. These walls have witnessed divided loyalties, secret plans, and a nation on the brink of independence. The tavern, found at “the sign of the Golden Ball,” welcomed travelers from 1770 to 1793. For the 200 years, six generations of the Jones family carefully preserved the home and its stories—creating a rare, unbroken link to the past. Today, the Golden Ball Tavern Museum invites visitors to experience early American life up close. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the museum houses hundreds of original artifacts and offers engaging programs, lectures, and events that bring history vividly to life for all ages. Open year-round from February through December, the museum welcomes visitors every Thursday (10 a.m.–4 p.m.) and on the second Sunday of each month (1–4 p.m.). The museum has a special, week-long holiday event in December which is open to the public each day. Whether you're a history enthusiast or just curious about the past, there’s something here for everyone. Our largest fundraiser of the year - the Golden Ball Tavern Museum's Barn Sale - will celebrate its 59th year on September 26th, 2026. Join us from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. You’ll find gorgeous items donated by local and wider community members—many who are moving, downsizing, or just clearing space.
