Concord Area Humanists invites you to a discussion and dialogue entitled “The Accidental Universe”. The special speaker will be Alan Lightman. This special meeting will be held on Wednesday, Oct 1, 2014 at 7 p.m. at First Parish Hall, 20 Lexington Rd, Concord MA.
Alan, a Concord, MA resident, has written an essay titled “The Accidental Universe: Science’s Crisis of Faith” published in Harper’s Magazine in January. (The full text can be found through Google.) The thesis in this article is that we are living in a universe uncalculable by science.
Alan Lightman (born Nov. 28, 1948) is an American physicist, writer, and social entrepreneur. He is a professor of humanities at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the author of the international bestseller “Einstein’s Dreams”. He was the first profressor at MIT to receive a joint appointment in the sciences and the humanities.

After Alan’s presentation, Dr Henry Vaillant will start a discussion by asking Alan some provocative questions with a bio-medical slant. You may remember Henry from his excellent presentation at our Charles Darwin and Abraham Lincoln Birthday Party in February. Many know him as a practicing doctor in the area as well as having had responsible positions at Emerson Hospital.
