Peter Sykes Plays Bach's Glorious Goldberg Variations

Peter Sykes, an extraordinary musician, will perform Bach's marvelous, much-loved Goldberg Variations on a rare replica of a 1716 German harpsichord.  An aria with 30 variations of almost miraculous diversity--it even has a joke with folk tunes--this work is one of the most difficult challenges of the entire harpsichord repertory, a pinnacle to be scaled only by the most skilled masters of the instrument.  The music is ravishing to listen to when played by a virtuoso of the caliber of Peter Sykes.  Created to soothe an insomniac Russian count--according to a charming old tale--it must have kept him awake, hoping for more.
