Free World Drumming Workshop Offered
Engage with music in an entirely new way! Pavoh the music nonprofit brings African drumming to Watertown Boys & Girls Club on 2/11/16
World Drumming comes to Watertown and youth are encouraged to explore this new music experience at the Watertown Boys & Girls Club 25 Whites Avenue, Watertown on February 11, 2016 between 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. This workshop will focus on traditional percussion music from Africa and will take youth on a fun, exciting intercultural journey. Drumming offers a fresh approach to music education...and it’s fun! Pavoh, a Waltham, MA-based nonprofit that inspires and celebrates young musicians, is presenting this FREE special 2-hour Drumming Workshop at the Club for all registered members. New club memberships are available for youth from Watertown and surrounding communities.
“Kids love drumming because it’s exciting, because it grooves, and because it’s a great physical release,” explains Pavoh Instructor Jeremy Cohen. “With their interest in learning music sparked, a whole new world of possibilities opens up.” Cohen is experienced as a classroom teacher, conservatorytrained musician and African adventurer.
Opening new possibilities for youth is exactly the goal of this new partnership between Pavoh and the Watertown Boys & Girls Club which began in Fall 2015 with Beginning Guitar Lessons. “It’s important for us to offer something for every interest,” said Chris Crombie, program director at the Watertown Boys & Girls Club. “We’re excited to offer new music programming at the Club.”

NEW COMMUNITY PROGRAMMING
One of the ways Pavoh fulfills it’s mission is by bringing music programs to community partners. Pavoh works with community organizations to create music programs and oneofakindexperiences. Mentorships between youth and accomplished Pavoh musicians is a key factor in its programming. Currently, Pavoh musician Cole Brightbill from Newton is leading Guitar Club each week at the Watertown Boys & Girls Club, an opportunity for youth to practice guitar and explore new songs. Last fall, Pavoh presented Beginning Guitar Lessons and has received a grant from the Watertown Cultural Council to provide the program again this winter. The Watertown Cultural Council is a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
