Regis to Host Physical Activity and Nutrition Fair for Children

WESTON, MA.

Is your youngster interested in fitness, food and fun?  Do you want to enhance the well-being of your pre-school to sixth-grade child? Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and tripled in adolescents in the past 30 years, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It is the cause of immediate and long-term health and well-being issues including cardiovascular disease and pre-diabetes. Obesity has become such a national issue that First Lady Michelle Obama has launched Let’s Move! a nationwide campaign to tackle the challenge of childhood obesity. Next Thursday, November 21, from 3:30-6:00 p.m., there’s a program at Regis College that also addresses those concerns. It’s free and open to the public.

Students in the Health and Fitness Studies program at Regis College have designed and organized an event to promote physical activity and healthy nutrition to children aged preschool to grade 6 and their parents. The goal is to increase parents’ understanding of the types of physical activities children should participate in, to provide children with fun movement opportunities, and to educate both children and parents regarding healthy nutrition.

“Our desire is to increase awareness of and opportunity for physical activity and healthy nutrition for children,” said Catherine Fuller, PhD, Director of the Health and Fitness Studies program at Regis. “The holidays notorious for family overeating are coming up, and our students want to prepare children and families with strategies to maintain a healthy balance.” During the event children will visit stations set up around the gym to participate in activities such as relay races, basketball shooting, hopscotch, scooters and balancing activities. Healthy snacks will be provided and prizes will be awarded.
