Weston girls’ varsity basketball lost again Friday night to Bedford, a formidable opponent in the DCL Small. Weston, the returning back-to-back DCL Small champions, were fighting for the title that night against the Bucs, who held the same record in the league. Bedford’s win now puts them at first in the league.

The ‘Cats came out roaring on Friday, fueled by the teeming crowd. Unfortunately, the were only able to really stay in it for the first quarter when Bedford’s defense prevented almost every offensive drive after that point.

Under the blocks, Weston was not nearly as successful as it’s been grabbing rebounds.

“Rebounding is key; grabbing every 50-50 ball makes us that more likely to rack up the points,” said head coach Mark Madden. The team average was well below 10 per player despite the height advantage.

The final score was 56-19 with the ‘Cats scoring a mere eight points in the entire second half. However, the defense for Weston was at its peak in beginning minutes of the third and fourth quarters that held Bedford from scoring for several minutes.

At the start of the Bedford game, Madden spoke to his players and got them riled up to fight for the title Weston has held for two years, saying, “We are the DCL Champions until somebody takes it from us. Do not let them take it from us tonight.”

The girls face Bedford once more this season at which point if both teams win out in the DCL Small, Weston has a shot at tying for the title if they beat them come game day. Weston faces Bedford at Weston on Friday, Feb. 17 at 7 p.m.

Tonight Weston will be playing Acton-Boxborough at home at 5:30 p.m. Come by and support the Wildcats as they take on this DCL-large competitor.
