High School Works on 'The Hot Mikado'

Weston High School Theater Company prepares for show opening this week.

What do you get when you blend the inspired silliness of Gilbert & Sullivan’s "The Mikado" with the energy of swing, gospel and R&B?   The result is one of the funniest and most lively musicals you’ll ever see: "The Hot Mikado."

Weston High School students have been rehearsing for the musical and will perform later this week.

The story follows Nanki-Poo, the son of the Mikado of Japan. When he arrives in Titi-pu disguised as a jazz musician and attempts to woo his love Yum-Yum, he finds that the incompetent Lord High Executioner not only has his own eyes on Yum-Yum, he’d also like to behead Nanki-Poo. The citizens of Titi-pu joke, sing, scat and tap themselves through plot twists, absurdities and surprises on their way to a resolution in which “Joy reigns everywhere.”
