Hunger Relief at Land's Sake

This is an update on Land's Sake's hunger relief efforts in the summer of 2017.

WESTON - Charitable food donations have been a fundamental part of Land’s Sake’s history since the 1970s. Land’s Sake donates a significant portion of the farm’s crops to hunger relief agencies around Greater Boston such as The Boston Area Gleaners, Community Servings, and Lovin’ Spoonfuls Food Rescue. These agencies serve a variety of functions ranging from food pantries to shelters to nutrition and cooking education programs. In 2016, donations equaled about $75,000 (retail value) worth of produce, a number which has been significantly increasing each year.

This season, according to Sara Rostampour, the Assistant Farm Manager at Land’s Sake, “Our crops are thriving, and we’re able to significantly increase donation amounts. The Boston Area Gleaners have been a great partner. They’ve already come several times are were able to glean over 1000 pounds of lettuce and bok choi in one trip!”

Land's Sake has also expanded its connections with local hunger relief agencies this year. This season, for the first time, Land's Sake is donating produce to the Waltham Community Day Center, the only homeless day shelter in the MetroWest area. Because of this partnership, many people now have access freshly grown produce. Carolyn Montalto, the center’s Executive Director, says, “For the Community Day Center to be able to provide fresh vegetables to our guests is a win; but to also be able to reach out into the community itself--to those families whose struggles often go unnoticed--is a win-win! Thank you to Land’s Sake for the wonderful gift.”
