Nonprofit FUEL Education and The Vela Fund distributed turkeys, donated for a third year by Weston local Bernadette Rehnert, to 160 deserving families in the FUEL program in Chelsea, Mass., just in time for the holiday season.
The turkeys were gifted to the low-income families as a way to recognize their accomplishments and dedication to their children’s education. Many parents in the program work multiple jobs and may not have as much time for holiday shopping as others. The donation will also allow them to put the cost of a turkey toward their savings for their children’s higher education instead.
Striving to open up a world of opportunity for their children through higher education, FUEL families are required to save money for their children’s college education each month; participate in monthly Savings Circle meetings that provide college preparation support and financial literacy education; and enroll their children in FUEL’s partner community programs in Chelsea.
