More Victories for Weston Boys', Girls' Swim Teams

Boys record 8-0 overall; girls place second at annual Bay View Invitational.

Last week, the Weston boys’ swimming and diving team ran their record to 8-0 overall (5-0 in the DCL) with a pair of Dual County League victories over Acton-Boxborough and Boston Latin. In the meantime, the girls recorded a non-league win at Dana Hall. The girls then traveled to the University of Rhode Island for the annual Bay View Invitational on Sunday, and came away with a second-place finish in a field of more than 25 teams from Rhode Island and Massachusetts (rival Wayland took the team title).

The highlight of the week was the girls’ team performance in Rhode Island. Led by the terrific trio of seniors Maddie Pierce and Bianca Tocci, and freshman Julimar Avila, the girls stormed their way to victories in five of eleven events. Each of the three took an individual first and second. Tocci took gold in the butterfly while Avila was the winner in the 200 freestyle. Pierce, with two lifetime best times in her four swims, was the top backstroker at the meet. The trio also teamed with sophomore Victoria Bryson to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:39.11, just twenty-two hundredths of a second off the varsity record. Pierce and Tocci also joined Bryson and junior Katie Kim to take first in the opening medley relay.

Other individual point-scoring swims in Rhode Island were turned in by Bryson (in the sprints), Kim (50 free and butterfly), seniors Julia Meehan (fly and back) and Laura Beaudry (200 free), and rookies Nicole Davenport (IM and 500) and Sarah Varghese (50 free). Freshman Katherine Binney (10-second drop) and junior Jen Egan (13-second improvement) also showed marked improvement for the GLOWS. Weston’s 400 free relay of Avila, Kim, Beaudry, and Meehan took second place overall, in the meet’s final event. For her efforts, Avila was named the meet’s top freshman.

Earlier in the week, the girls dispatched of Dana Hall, 98-70, on the road. It was a workman-like performance for the visitors as they ran their record to 7-1 overall, 2-1 in the DCL. The most striking swim of the meet was a nine-second improvement by Claire Reeves in breaststroke.

For the boys, last Thursday’s win over A-B was certainly the high point of the week. Seniors Tommy Fitzgerald and Ian Delaney starred in the contest. Fitzgerald had a pair of best times, the most important of which broke up a potential A-B sweep in backstroke, and actually clinched the victory for the hosts. Delaney was a double winner in the sprints, leading a 1-2-3 finish for The Tide in the 50 freestyle that really changed the complexion of the meet. He was chased home by classmate Tyler Lewtan and Sam Cekala in the event.

Juniors Tommy Peacher (200 and 500 free) and Ryan Burrow (IM and breast) took their customary two wins each in their specialties. Weston’s only other individual first came from Lewtan in the 100 fly. Other strong individual performances were put up by senior Kian Nowrouzi (first time over 200 points in diving) and junior Drew Alcaide (two-second drop in backstroke).

Weston dominated the relay competition against Acton, taking all three races. The Tide took the opening medley behind Fitzgerald, Burrow, Lewtan, and Cekala. In the 200 free relay, Lewtan, sophomore Dan Spellman, Delaney, and Peacher took top honors. And The Tide closed the meet with a win in the 400 free relay from Peacher, Cekala, Delaney, and Burrow.

One day later, the boys bounced back for a win over Boston Latin. The meet was highlighted by major time improvements from freshmen Alan Blaesser and Will Bertelson. Sophomore Harry Teplow also took his first varsity win, in breaststroke.

Weston hosted Newton South on Tuesday, and hosts Lincoln-Sudbury this afternoon at 4 p.m. in a DCL showdown. Saturday, the boys will travel south to URI to take part in the annual Read/Watmough Invitational. The meet will begin at 9:30 a.m.
