Plans for our new $12,000,000 Weston Police Station include a state of the art 1,500 square foot shooting range. However, just such a shooting range is being built at this very moment, about a mile down Route 20, behind the Mobil Gas Station and Dunkin Donuts, at the junction of Route 95.
That would be the new Weston Shooters Club at 8 Sibley Road, on the banks of the Charles River. And in fact when this group came to the Weston Board of Selectmen last year to discuss their project, our selectmen spoke appreciatively of how this facility could save the town big bucks on the building of our new station, because we would not need to build a shooting range there.
According to its website, The Weston Shooters Club will also feature a training room, locker room and grand lounge area. The membership rates look rather reasonable, and members will be able to let themselves in at any time, day or night. Why wouldn't the town simply provide memberships there for our police force?
In last week's Weston Town Crier selectman Michael Harrity (whom I am opposing in the May 10 election) expressed his shock at the 12 million dollar price tag for the new police station, but said not a word about the shooting range which is included in the present plans. Why not?
