The Sports Watch for August 8 - 12

The fastest three minutes in Weston sports.

It's Sunday, and you know what that means. It's time for the Sports Watch, the fastest three minutes in Weston Sports coming your way right now:

We go to the diamond, and the Brookline 'B' baseball team had a lineup that produced from top to bottom, leading to a 9-3 victory over Weston during the Lou Tompkins American League Trophy competition.

“We always talk about trying to go up and down the line,” Brookline coach Mike Normant said. “And we really kept the line moving. The bottom of the order really contributed. We really did a nice job one through 10 in the batting order today.”

Meanwhile, the season ends for Weston despite a better effort than the score would indicate.

“Unfortunately, we had a little trouble throwing some strikes,” Weston head coach Justin Miller said. “We had four games last week, so everybody is a little tired. But the kids battled. They didn’t give up, which is great. Offensively, we’ve been struggling all year to drive the ball.”

Brookline’s offense did not struggle as it took an early lead when Patrick Webler and Jonas Webler each ripped an RBI single in the first inning. After scoring two more runs the next inning, Brookline all but put the game away in the third..

Jonah Greenfield was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, Marcus Ross followed with a RBI single to left, and then Jonas Webler crossed on a Josh Pang grounder to first, giving Brookline a 7-0 lead.

In addition to his offensive contributions, Jonas Webler did the job on the hill. Webler allowed only one run on five hits, while striking out two in five innings of work.

“He was great,[he] threw strikes,” Normant said. “I just said to them that it’s really nice to be a player in the field behind someone who is throwing strikes. He mixed up his pitches real well and kept them off balance.”

Scott Westvold put Weston on the board in the fourth inning when he doubled home James Sacco. Then in the sixth, Dominec Nardone scored on a wild pitch, and Ian Dvorak followed on a groundout. But Weston couldn't do any further damage.
