Tourney Bound! Boys Lacrosse Clinches Postseason Berth

'Cats cage Lions as Weston improves to a stunning 9-1.

An incredible early to mid-season run in which the Weston boys’ lacrosse team has gone 9-1, including yesterday’s 12-3 win over visiting Newton South, has sealed a spot for the Wildcats in the Division 3 North state tourney.

“We continue to have great team chemistry and the kids are really coachable and care about each other, which is key to our success,” said Weston head coach Jim Wilcon, whose squad stands at 4-1 in the Dual County League Small Division.

In yesterday’s victory over the Lions, Weston again was clicking on all cylinders. Senior captain and forward Kyle Nickerson led the ‘Cats with four goals, three of which came in the first half, as Weston shot out to an 8-1 advantage.

“We played pretty well today,” Wilcon said. “We had a few turnovers early, but had a 2-0 lead after the first quarter. We got better ball movement as the game went on and opened up the lead to 8-1.”

Sophomore forward Geoff Ziobro had a hat trick in the second half. Fellow sophomore and midfielder Matt Knight also played a strong game with a goal and three assists.

Wilcon also lauded the play of this squad’s tenacious defense.

“Our defense did an outstanding job limiting their offense to three goals and shutting down their two best players,” the coach said.

The junior contingent of Steve Iodice, Matt Atkins, Rob Bennett, and goalie Jared Fong led Weston’s dynamic “D,” and was supported by fellow defenders Harrison Fontaine, Nick Colangelo, Greg Lanzillo, and Nick Preacher.

Weston will visit Tyngsboro in a DCL Small Division tilt tomorrow.
