Weston Boys' Hockey Notches Second Win of Season

The Wildcats beat the Newton South Lions, 3-2.

In a physical contest featuring 14 penalties, the Weston High School boys' hockey team topped Newton South, 3-2, at Ryan Arena in Watertown Saturday afternoon.

“We have to stop taking penalties,” said Wildcats coach Carl Corazzini. “We have a lot of talent up front. Our first two lines, our first four d-men are really good players. We just have been taking too many penalties the last few games. We were fortunate enough to get a great game out of a few players, especially Jack Dennehy and Luc Pomerance.”

With the victory, Weston improves to 2-0-1 on the season while Newton South drops to 2-1.

“We have to be way more disciplined,” said Lions coach Chris Ryberg. “Weston played physical. We didn’t answer the right way to their physicality. We took too many stupid penalties, very undisciplined. That was the difference. It’s hard to get any flow, or any momentum, when you spend that much time killing penalties.”

The Wildcats burst out of the gates with Matt Timperio netting a tally unassisted just six seconds into the contest. But the Lions would pull even ten minutes later as Joseph Trask fired a puck home during a power play. Newton South’s Kevin Dober was credited with the assist.

Four minutes into the second period, John Goguen brought the puck around the Lions’ net and relayed it to Joseph Pasquale, who scored giving the Wildcats the 2-1 lead. Severino Tocci then augmented Weston’s advantage five minutes later when he scored a power-play goal on an assist from Dennehy.

The Lions managed to cut the deficit to one after a Marr Tucker tally near the end of the second period. But the Wildcats would hold on to the victory as senior goalie Sam Goodman was a force in net, including making a key glove save with three minutes remaining in the contest.

“We needed a big save and he came across and made a great save there at the end of the period,” said Corazzini. “That probably wins us the game.”
