Weston Boys Soccer Takes Season-Opening Win

The Wildcats defeat DCL rival Boston Latin, 2-0.

Weston boys soccer first-year coach Tom McHenry took the reins of the Wildcats after Renato Capobianco departed for Regis College. His early tenure was marked by a rough preseason in which Weston faced a series of strong teams. And complicating McHenry’s learning of his new team was the fact the Wildcats missed several practices due to Tropical Storm Irene.

But Weston brushed aside these arduous hurdles and defeated Dual County League-foe Boston Latin, 2-0, Wednesday afternoon at home to start the season.

“They’re looking good,” McHenry said of his team. “Everybody seems to be doing well.”

Weston received a pair of goals from senior midfielder Adam Guerin. The first arrived around the 30th minute as junior Chason Timko brought the ball from the back, down the side, and crossed it to Guerin, who buried it in the back of the net.

Guerin would then boot his deuce in around the 65th mark on a pass from Matt Martin.

The Wildcats’ shutout of Boston Latin illustrates their strong suite this season: a formidable back field. The tandem of junior Mike Ganning and senior Mark Fishman provide a stalwart presence in net while lock-down defender Steve Iodice will look to continue to keep the ball out of the Wildcats’ territory.

Weston is led this year by captains Guerin, Iodice, John Foody, and Kyle Kachadurian. With it being his first year, McHenry commented that the boys have been instrumental, lending a voice during training and in games.

“They’ve been with the program a long time and they’ve helped me from the get-go,” he said. “They’re always giving me a hand, always looking to help. They never say anything negative; it is always positive.”

Returning to action Friday, the Wildcats will hit the road to take on Acton-Boxborough for a 4 p.m. contest.
