Weston Boys Tennis Stays Undefeated
With 4-1 win over Westford Academy, defending Division 3 state champions start out 4-0.

After Westford Academy dispatched Concord-Carlisle last week, Weston head coach George Conlin figured he would have a tough match on his hands.
But No. 1 singles player Will Spector set the tone early as the undefeated Wildcats upended the Grey Ghosts, 4-1, on their home court in the first of five matches this week.
The Dual County All-Star senior remained unbeaten on the season and blanked Brendan Holman 6-0, 6-0 and Rutendo Matingo followed up with a relatively easy 6-3, 6-1 win over Kevin Chen in No. 2 singles.

The defending D3 state champs did not run into much trouble until Jason Mazella struggled in his first set against Victor Braescu in No. 3 singles, but the senior refocused in the second set to cruise 6-4, 6-0 as Weston improved to 4-0 on the season.
“Sure, it was a tough third (singles) set, but Jason poured it on,” said Conlin.“First doubles was a little slow and we just haven’t figured out second doubles yet.”

In doubles, Matt Gorelick and Max Legocki defeated Jamison Bigham and Corey Hu 6-3, 6-1 while Trevor Sands and Ben Spector dropped the only match for the Wildcats in a 4-6, 2-6 loss to Chris Alto and John Lawson in No.2 doubles as Westford Academy avoided the complete sweep.
Due to the weather, the Wildcats are booked all week long with contests that will truly test the defending state champions. Up next is Newton South at home today and the Lions’ No.1 singles player Tyler Epstein, who should provide Spector with his first real test of the season.
Then Weston travels to Bedford and Lincoln-Sudbury, another weather-related makeup, while ending the school week with a tough Concord-Carlisle team on Friday.
“I don’t know what to expect,” said Conlin. “We get Newton South at home and it should be our toughest match to date because (Newton) has a lot of depth. It will be a great matchup and I know we are looking forward to it”.
