Dr. Joan Bines, Author of Word They Lived By: Colonial New England Speech, Then and Now

Have you ever wondered where the expression “to be at loggerheads” came from? You might feel certain that no one was talking about turtles. But what were they talking about? Or what did it really mean to the colonists to “be on tenterhooks?” Or what did they see when they spoke of a “milestone?” Come enjoy an entertaining morning as Joan weaves together history and language to regale you with stories, poems, and anecdotes that will enlighten and delight.

Joan Bines received her doctorate from the University of Virginia in American Diplomatic History. In 1984, after starting her family of four children and teaching for a number of years, she became the director of the Golden Ball Tavern Museum, a gracious 1760s Georgian tavern and home in Weston, Massachusetts, where, alongside running the programs and overseeing the development of the museum, she was able to indulge her love of language and history, as well as her love of photography to create the book she will talk with us about at the Forum: Words They Lived By: Colonial New England Speech, Then and Now.
