Local Greek Market Celebrates Greek Lenten Traditions

West Roxbury, MA — As the season of Lent begins for millions observing Orthodox Christian traditions, Greek International Food Market in West Roxbury is welcoming the community to explore the rich flavors and centuries-old traditions of Greek Lenten cuisine. Owner Katerina Iliades, whose family has served the Boston Greek community for decades, says many of the foods enjoyed during Lent reflect long-standing Greek culinary traditions. “Lent is a forty-day season leading up to Easter when many families embrace traditional fasting foods rooted in the Mediterranean diet,” says Iliades. “The dishes enjoyed during this time — from beans and vegetables to seafood and olive oil — have been part of Greek culinary traditions for centuries.” During the Lenten season, many Christians avoid meat and dairy, turning instead to a vibrant variety of Mediterranean dishes that are naturally plant-based and deeply rooted in Greek culinary tradition. At Greek International Food Market, customers can enjoy a wide selection of traditional homemade Lenten meals including: Okra in tomato sauce Greek string beans (fasolakia) Stuffed grape leaves (dolmades) Giant beans baked in tomato sauce (gigantes) Bean salads and Mediterranean vegetable dishes The market also carries a large variety of Lenten pantry staples and imported Greek products, including vegan Greek pies, Mediterranean vegetables, canned and dried beans, and an extensive olive bar featuring a wide selection of Greek olives. At 11:30 a.m., Saturday, April 2, Governor Charlie Baker will preside at a tribute to the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings in 2013 and join with community members to celebrate the resilience of runners, residents, visitors, and others.The event is being held at the Bowker Overpass which is just outside Kenmore Square MBTA Station and which is on Commonwealth Avenue inbound.A tribute will be unveiled by Governor Baker. Please join us. All are welcome.
