Boston Teachers Union Hosting City-Wide Math Competition Today

The Boston Teachers Union, in conjunction with the Boston Public Schools is hosting their 2nd Annual Math Rocks competition on the morning of Tuesday, April 30th at their facility in Dorchester.

70 teams from Boston Public Schools to participate in 2nd Annual Event

Boston, MA – The Boston Teachers Union, in conjunction with the Boston Public Schools is hosting their 2nd Annual Math Rocks competition on the morning of Tuesday, April 30th at their facility in Dorchester.

“We are extremely pleased with the widespread support from teachers across the school system who have helped plan this event.  They have worked hard to ensure the participation of approximately 55 BPS schools at 4 levels of competition,” said Richard Stutman, President of the BTU.  “We are pleased that we can encourage the participation of an estimated 400 students in an academic competition that promotes the concept that being good in math is as ‘cool’ as being good in sports,” said Stutman. 

Below is a brief outline of the events and timeline:

10:00am to 11:30am  - Competition

·  4 individual competitions:

   Grades 4-5, 6-8, 9-10, and 11-12

·  All students to compete in individual problem sets

·  All school teams to compete in group problem competition

11:30 am to Noon – Awards Ceremony and Lunch

·  All student participants will receive recognition of their participation in this event.

·  Mayor Menino, Superintendent Johnson and BTU President Stutman will present winning individuals and teams with their awards.

This event, developed and funded by the Boston Teachers Union, will see approximately 400 students competing from across the BPS system.  They represent every level of the system including elementary schools, middle and k-8 schools and high schools.
