West Roxbury Retail Block continues improvements and adds new bakery cafe

“Fairview Corner” a hub for women owned businesses.

A once long neglected retail building at the corner of Spring and Baker Streets is now renewed and renamed. “Fairview Corner” is the established home to several women owned businesses in the art deco structure.

“Fairview Corner” has opened open its doors with over 3,000 square feet of commercial space and ample customer parking in the rear of the building. The structure’s 4 of its 5 units are now occupied by all female business owners with a focus on retail and hospitality. Building owner Shirley Walsh is excited to offer this unique space to the community.

“Fairview Corner will bring a much longed for retail and cafe experience to the block, as well as bringing women together to thrive in business.” Walsh adds that she is delighted with the community support. “We have had so much positive feedback since opening the shops these past 12 months. Folks now know we are here - a destination shopping spot in town. Our customers love the ease of parking in the back of the building.” As well, the “Sales and Cocktails” events on the 3rd Thursday of each month have brought a new evening pastime to the area.

Stores now open are:

- a charming and hip women’s clothing boutique, opened March 1, with finds from seasoned clothing maven Marika Gaurenszky, also a West Roxbury resident. Her New York buying trips bring a fun and lively assortment of garments that rotate seasonally.

- which originally opened in November 2011 as a holiday store, is here to stay and has developed a successful following. Winner of the Boston Main Streets Holiday Window Decorating contest - it is owned and run by West Roxbury resident Elizabeth Hoenscheid. The shop offers bright and clever accessories, including bags, scarves, wraps and bling.

Broadening its offering to vintage and artisan home decor, furniture, estate jewelry, as well as private consignment and restoration services, building and shop owner Shirley Walsh is delighted with the strong surge of business in its reopening in just the past two weeks.

Opening this fall, , a bakery and cafe, established by Spring Street Cafe owner Beth McNichols in partnership with Fran Kolenik, will offer delicious homemade baked goods, pies, cookies and bars, in a funky, relaxed atmosphere.

With the one remaining space leased by US Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren, the corner is bustling with commerce and politics.

The block had been much neglected over the years. Walsh’s removal of the multiple billboards above the storefronts, facade renovations, streetscaping and clever window displays from fellow businesses have opened up the well traveled gateway intersection and created a more appealing sense of place.

A fall ribbon cutting celebration is being planned.
