Owner Katerina Iliades, whose family has served the Boston Greek community for decades, says many of the foods enjoyed during Lent reflect long-standing Greek culinary traditions. “Lent is a forty-day season leading up to Easter when many families embrace traditional fasting foods rooted in the Mediterranean diet,” says Iliades. “The dishes enjoyed during this time — from beans and vegetables to seafood and olive oil — have been part of Greek culinary traditions for centuries.” During the Lenten season, many Christians avoid meat and dairy, turning instead to a vibrant variety of Mediterranean dishes that are naturally plant-based and deeply rooted in Greek culinary tradition. At Greek International Food Market, customers can enjoy a wide selection of traditional homemade Lenten meals including: Okra in tomato sauce Greek string beans (fasolakia) Stuffed grape leaves (dolmades) Giant beans baked in tomato sauce (gigantes) Bean salads and Mediterranean vegetable dishes The market also carries a large variety of Lenten pantry staples and imported Greek products, including vegan Greek pies, Mediterranean vegetables, canned and dried beans, and an extensive olive bar featuring a wide selection of Greek olives. Kevin Donnelly of West Roxbury earned a trip to the National Catholic Forensic League Grand Tournament at George Mason University over Memorial Day weekend after an impressive year of wins in the category of original oratory. At Nationals, Donnelly competed against 256 other students in his category. Despite not advancing to the finals, Donnelly had an impressive run on Friday and Saturday, making the octo-final round of 48. "Our team represented us well this weekend," said head coach Rob Croteau. "They enjoyed themselves, and they showed great enthusiasm for the competition. Their perseverance paid off." Over 2,700 competitors from 65 dioceses around the country converged at the tournament, which was held at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. The team from CM came home with four octo-finalist medals and one quarterfinal medal in declamation and original oratory. This was a press release from the Catholic Memorial School.
