Expanding ShotSpotter, creating a voluntary registry of surveillance cameras, mobile technology units, all part of Consalvo’s vision for a safer Boston

Boston – At a press conference today, Mayoral candidate City Councilor Rob Consalvo outlined his vision to use the latest and most effective technology to make our neighborhoods safer, put criminals on notice and to prevent and solve crime.

“Brazen shootings in our neighborhoods and the recent assaults on women on Beacon Hill and in the North End have no place in our city,” Consalvo said. “I want to make sure we bring the latest technology to bear to help prevent crime and assist law enforcement with catching perpetrators who break the law.”

As a City Councilor, Consalvo has been focused on making sure law enforcement benefits from innovative technology like ShotSpotter, an acoustic gunshot technology that automatically alerts police a gun is fired. Consalvo lead to charge to implement ShotSpotter technology and since the devices have been deployed, police, fire and EMS are able to respond quicker to arrest suspects and provide aid to shooting victims. 30 percent of all police responses for shots fired since ShotSpotter went live did not have 911 calls associated with them.

Consavlo’s vision for using innovative technology to create a safer Boston includes:

·      Expanding ShotSpotter to every neighborhood and linking ShotSpotter to cameras.

·      A voluntary registry of private and public surveillance cameras to better coordinate cameras in the city and allow Boston Police to quickly locate footage of crime scenes.

·      A mobile technology unit able to rapidly deploy cameras, ShotSpotter and other innovate technology to crime hot spots or high profile public events.

·      Dash mounted video cameras and mobile fingerprint scanners in every Boston Police cruiser.

·      Emergency vehicle preemption that coordinates traffic signals to allow first responders to safely and quickly pass through intersections and arrive on scene quicker.

“Boston is a world-wide leader in innovation and I want to harness the brainpower and expertise in our innovation communities to come up with common sense technology to keep our streets safe,” Consalvo said.
