Local Greek Market Celebrates Greek Lenten Traditions

West Roxbury, MA — As the season of Lent begins for millions observing Orthodox Christian traditions, Greek International Food Market in West Roxbury is welcoming the community to explore the rich flavors and centuries-old traditions of Greek Lenten cuisine. Owner Katerina Iliades, whose family has served the Boston Greek community for decades, says many of the foods enjoyed during Lent reflect long-standing Greek culinary traditions. “Lent is a forty-day season leading up to Easter when many families embrace traditional fasting foods rooted in the Mediterranean diet,” says Iliades. “The dishes enjoyed during this time — from beans and vegetables to seafood and olive oil — have been part of Greek culinary traditions for centuries.” During the Lenten season, many Christians avoid meat and dairy, turning instead to a vibrant variety of Mediterranean dishes that are naturally plant-based and deeply rooted in Greek culinary tradition. At Greek International Food Market, customers can enjoy a wide selection of traditional homemade Lenten meals including: Okra in tomato sauce Greek string beans (fasolakia) Stuffed grape leaves (dolmades) Giant beans baked in tomato sauce (gigantes) Bean salads and Mediterranean vegetable dishes The market also carries a large variety of Lenten pantry staples and imported Greek products, including vegan Greek pies, Mediterranean vegetables, canned and dried beans, and an extensive olive bar featuring a wide selection of Greek olives. Take a Journey with Girl Scouts! Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts will be offerinng an 8 session Journey Series for Daisies (girls K-1) and Brownies (girls 2-3) starting in October. Girls will make new friends and discover Girl Scouting. Daisies learn just how much they can care for animals and for themselves—and just how good that makes them feel. Brownies will learn  about how they can create positive change in the world—change that affects girls. Interest in volunteering? Volunteers are needed.
