Owner Katerina Iliades, whose family has served the Boston Greek community for decades, says many of the foods enjoyed during Lent reflect long-standing Greek culinary traditions. “Lent is a forty-day season leading up to Easter when many families embrace traditional fasting foods rooted in the Mediterranean diet,” says Iliades. “The dishes enjoyed during this time — from beans and vegetables to seafood and olive oil — have been part of Greek culinary traditions for centuries.” During the Lenten season, many Christians avoid meat and dairy, turning instead to a vibrant variety of Mediterranean dishes that are naturally plant-based and deeply rooted in Greek culinary tradition. At Greek International Food Market, customers can enjoy a wide selection of traditional homemade Lenten meals including: Okra in tomato sauce Greek string beans (fasolakia) Stuffed grape leaves (dolmades) Giant beans baked in tomato sauce (gigantes) Bean salads and Mediterranean vegetable dishes The market also carries a large variety of Lenten pantry staples and imported Greek products, including vegan Greek pies, Mediterranean vegetables, canned and dried beans, and an extensive olive bar featuring a wide selection of Greek olives. The West Roxbury Evening Garden Club will hold its monthly meeting at the Ohrenberger School Library from 7 - 9 P.M. on Wednesday, April 11.  The program will consist of a slide show and lecture of the 2011 London Garden Tour.  Speakers will be Master Gardeners Ann Cropper and Kathy Lino, who participated in the tour. The meeting is open to the public upon payment of a fee of $5.00.  This fee is waived for those who join the garden club. Membership dues from now until September are $15.00. The Ohrenberger School is at 147 West Boundary road, off Washington Street.
