Gun Incident a 'Normal Day' say Students at West Roxbury Education Complex

Suspect may have been let in by another student. Students respond to one of their peers getting arrested with a loaded gun in school this morning.

The majority of students polled after school characterized the school day as a normal school day, even with a peer being .

All students were offered anonymity to remove any fear of retaliation.

"I heard someone had a gun," said a student, who warned that students may be hostile to reporters because media only shows up for bad news. The student said he felt safe and that there was "just chattering" about a student having a gun.

The 14-year-old male from Roxbury was seen on video coming into a side entrance instead of the front door, Boston Police have said. Staff then confronted the student and was detained while the weapon was seized. The boy was held without bail after prosecutors moved for a dangerousness hearing, said Suffolk County District Attorney's officer spokesperson Jake Wark. The boy's next court date is scheduled for Oct. 28.

One student at the school alleged that the suspect texted his girlfriend inside the school, who then let the suspect in the side entrance. Boston Public Schools Media Director Matt Wilder said Boston School Police and staff were investigating whether another student helped the suspect enter the building.

Wilder said prior to today the school used metal detectors randomly at the staff's discretion, but "considering today's incident, they will be using them indefinitely going forward."

From now on the school will be using metal detectors every day, which one student said was not the case before today. "What the school does is they have metal detectors only for late people."

Parents were notified of the incident, which is how some students found out. Said one student, "I got a text from my mom letting me know. It's just another day."

Another student called the day "casual", adding, "No one paid much attention to it." The student said the suspect was removed from a classroom without incident making it seem casual compared to a fight.

One female student said she felt safe at school until today's incident.

But most students seemed to shrug off the incident, "It was a normal day for us. Nothing scares us. It's a gangsta school!"
