Local Author Tom Burke to Introduce a New History of Boston College Hockey at Doyle's Cafe on November 18

Long-time West Roxbury resident Tom Burke and co-author Reid Oslin have announced that their recently published book, Tales from the Boston College Hockey Locker Room, is now available on line and in book stores everywhere.

They kick off their promotional tour with An Evening of Sports Talk at Doyle’s Café in Jamaica Plain, MA on Tuesday, November 18, from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m.

History with an Anecdotal Approach

Interviews with dozens of former BC players, coaches, and rivals form the core of the book, which is from Sports Publishing, an imprint of Skyhorse Publishing of New York. Included are chapters on the origin of hockey in Boston during the 1890s; the NCAA Tournament’s inception and BC’s first national title in 1949; modern-era rivalries with Harvard and Boston University; the Beanpot; and the Eagles’ skein of four NCAA Championships since 2001. Other chapters profile legendary coaches John “Snooks” Kelley, Len Ceglarski, and Jerry York.

The book is not just for BC loyalists. As the Authors’ Note states,

“College hockey is a unique sport. It is ‘big time,’ with many of its best players going on to win Olympic medals and carve out successful professional careers. Yet it is a ’small’ sport as well. Relatively few schools have chosen to make the game a part of their athletic tradition and to invest the time and treasure required for success. So the college hockey community is a tightly knit one. We’re an extended family. We’re all in this together.”

About the Authors:
Tom Burke, Eastern College Hockey’s first national correspondent, wrote for the Hockey News for eighteen years and was a New York Sunday Times college hockey contributor for seven years. He has served on the Hobey Baker Award Selection Committee, and he has been the arena voice of BC hockey for twenty-seven years and the stadium voice of BC football for thirty-nine years. This is his first book.

Reid Oslin was affiliated with Boston College for forty-one years, including twenty-four (1974–1997) as the Eagles’ associate athletic director and sports information director. He is a member of the school’s Hall of Fame and has written two books on BC Football.
