NEWTON-WELLESLEY HOSPITAL NAMES NEW CHIEF OF CARDIOLOGY

West Roxbury Resident George Philippides Joins Newton-Wellesley Hospital

George Philippides, MD, has been named Chief of Cardiology at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. He replaces Joel Rubenstein, MD, who recently retired after 44 years.

Dr. Philippides comes to Newton-Wellesley from Boston Medical Center, where he most recently served as the Director of the Coronary Care Unit. He had also held the role of Associate Chair of Clinical Affairs and Chief Quality Officer of the Cardiology Section at Boston Medical Center, and since 2010 had been the Medical Director of BMC’s Cardiovascular Outpatient Unit.
Dr. Philippides joins Newton-Wellesley at a critical time- as the hospital gears up to open its new Elfers Cardiovascular Center. “Recent advances in cardiovascular care continue to benefit patients with cardiac risk factors through early intervention, new procedures and improved treatment plans. I am thrilled to join Newton-Wellesley’s outstanding cardiology team to expand services and provide a well coordinated, comprehensive approach to cardiovascular care in our community,” said Dr. Philippides.

Cardiologists at Newton-Wellesley Hospital have a strong tradition of providing excellent care. The Elfers Cardiovascular Center will be opening in 2015 and will introduce to our community the newest high technology imaging systems for early diagnosis of heart disease as well as community-based prevention programs. This multidisciplinary Center will be a clinical collaboration with the Massachusetts General Hospital Cardiology Division and will be dedicated to the early diagnosis, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of patients with cardiovascular disease. Patients will have access to expert medical teams, including cardiologists, vascular surgeons, electrophysiologists and interventional radiologists from both Newton-Wellesley Hospital and Mass General—all in one convenient location, close to home.
