Local Greek Market Celebrates Greek Lenten Traditions

Owner Katerina Iliades, whose family has served the Boston Greek community for decades, says many of the foods enjoyed during Lent reflect long-standing Greek culinary traditions. “Lent is a forty-day season leading up to Easter when many families embrace traditional fasting foods rooted in the Mediterranean diet,” says Iliades. “The dishes enjoyed during this time — from beans and vegetables to seafood and olive oil — have been part of Greek culinary traditions for centuries.” During the Lenten season, many Christians avoid meat and dairy, turning instead to a vibrant variety of Mediterranean dishes that are naturally plant-based and deeply rooted in Greek culinary tradition. At Greek International Food Market, customers can enjoy a wide selection of traditional homemade Lenten meals including: Okra in tomato sauce Greek string beans (fasolakia) Stuffed grape leaves (dolmades) Giant beans baked in tomato sauce (gigantes) Bean salads and Mediterranean vegetable dishes The market also carries a large variety of Lenten pantry staples and imported Greek products, including vegan Greek pies, Mediterranean vegetables, canned and dried beans, and an extensive olive bar featuring a wide selection of Greek olives. First graders, junior highers, and everyone in between filled the auditorium on Friday afternoon for a colorful all-school assembly. The Spring Friendship Assembly opened with the Pledge of Allegiance, led by third graders Sean Cornely and Kaiya Holman, and included song, dance, poetry, readings, and presentations of various awards that students had earned throughout the school year. Special guests included Luke Heller, representing the Red Sox Foundation, who announced Red Sox Scholars Finalist Genesis Villar, and presented the Young Latino Heroes Award.
