Torched Back Bay Building Where Boston Firefighters Died Sells for $6.5M

The Back Bay brownstone where two Boston firefighters lost their lives battling a nine-alarm fire in March has been sold for $6.5 million, the Boston Business Journal reported Monday. 

The multifamily apartment building was reportedly listed with Coldwell Banker in an off-market sale and assessed at $1.1 million; it was owned by the estate of Michael J. Callahan and bought by Hexagon LLC 298, according to the BBJ. 

Boston Fire Lt. Edward Walsh and Boston Firefighter Michael Kennedy died from smoke inhalation and thermal injuries while battling a nine-alarm blaze inside the building on March 26.

D&J Ironworks, a Malden welding company, was reportedly working next door at 296 Beacon St. without a permit or fire detail when the blaze ignited. Authorities believed sparks from the welding operation moved under the building’s clapboard or shingles. 

The now-previous owners of the building at 298 Beacon St. subsequently filed a multi-million-dollar lawsuit against the owners of the neighboring brownstone at 296 Beacon St. and the Malden welding company. The owner of the welding company has denied any blame.
