Want to Join the West Roxbury-Roslindale Rotary Club?

Don't let the headline fool you, the West Roxbury-Roslindale Rotary Club isn't in need of members, but it wouldn't hurt to bolster the membership of the local community service based organization.

The local entity of Rotary International has a roster of 25 Parkway area business professionals involved in varied industries. Rotary has 1.2 million members dedicated to a "Service Above Self" with more than 34,000 clubs worldwide.

Members of the West Roxbury-Roslindale chapter meet every Tuesday at noon at - and the Club has their own menu (see attached picture). The group is a boisterious bunch, full of laughter as they discuss their recent Rotarian fundraising efforts, business, and the previous evening's television.

At this past Tuesday's meeting, Parkway Printing's Frank Laprise started with an opening nondenominational prayer, Let My Eyes Be Opened:

Let me awake and see the beauty

that surrounds me all around.

Let me hear the singing birds

make their wonderful sound.

Let me thank God for my health

that has been good to me so far.

Let all my dreams come true

when wishing upon a star.

Let me be thankful for friendship

that was lovingly given me.

Let me never forget the caring

that was made for me to see.

The local Rotary chapter has continually been involved in community service in the Parkway area with members ringing the Salvation Army bell for the ; sponsoring a Parkway Little League team; funding the Dictionary Project; funding the Jason Roberts Challenger Little League; and helping with Rotary International's global mission to eradicate polio.

The Club is sending two members, Domenic Rubelo and Alan MacKinnon to to this Saturday's Rotary Leadership Institute program run by the international entity.

Recently, the West Roxbury-Roslindale Rotary Club held its annual .

Anne Green, the branch manager of the , has been a member of Rotary since 2000 and she said her favorite thing about Rotary is "the camaraderie between business people."

"It's a nice way for all the people in the business community to give back," said Bob Starr, of .

Alan MacKinnon, president of , joined in the last two years after a current member asked him to join. MacKinnon said being a member of the local Rotary Club helps him keep his "finger on the pulse of the community." 

Club President Terry Curran said her favorite part of the Club is the companionship it provides amongst local business leaders, and more individuals interested in joining are welcome.

"The best way (to learn more about joining) is to come to a meeting on Tuesday. Or contact an individual Rotarian if you know one."
