West Roxbury Brothers Came to see Red Sox Reliever Jonathan Papelbon, not Mayor Menino

Tamer-Mahoney brothers met Mayor and Papelbon at teacher appreciation event.

Most boys would likely prefer to meet an All-Star Red Sox player than a mayor. This was proven on Tuesday when West Roxbury's Tamer-Mahoney brothers were excited about meeting Jonathan Papelbon, but not too excited about meeting Boston Mayor Thomas Menino.

Max, 11, and Jackson, 10, were at a Boston Public Schools teacher appreciation day at the Orchard Gardens K-8 School in Roxbury, as was Papelbon and Menino.

The boys came with their mother, Mary Tamer, a member of the Boston School Committee.

"We came to see Papelbon," said Jackson, right after saying hello to the mayor, as his mother spoke to Menino.

The boys' mother also knew why her boys, dressed in sports gear, were there - to see Papelbon.

The event was sponsored by Dunkin' Donuts, which handed out drinks and goodies to anyone wanting hot apple cider or apple pie.

After several speakers including Menino and Superintendent Carol Johnson, Papelbon made a late appearance to a clapping crowd and cameras.

Papelbon asked the crowd to give all the teachers applause and then he made his way to two classrooms to leave notes for the students when they start school on Wednesday.

As for Jackson and Max, they got autographed balls, but weren't able to speak with Papelbon amongst the crowd.

And Max had a plan for his baseball, "Put it in a case."
