The Will McDonough Writing Contest is designed to encourage the development of language and writing skills while incorporating the topic of sports and concepts such as teamwork, respect, and perseverance. The winners are determined by judges from the Boston Globe, based on how well they organized and expressed ideas and addressed thetopic. The winners and their guests will be invited to attend the Celtics vs. Bucks game at the TD Garden immediately following the ceremony. The winners will also receive an e-reader as a prize. The writers winning essays will be displayed in the Will McDonough exhibit of The Sports Museum until next years contest.

Will McDonough, a former Boston Globe columnist of 44 years, was the only Boston Globe sportswriter to be nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. He passed away in January 2003. McDonough was a mentor to young writers and for this reason, The Sports Museum and his colleagues from the Boston Globe dedicated this contest in his memory. McDonoughs desk, photos and articles, and the winning essays are part of the Will McDonough exhibit in The Sports Museum.
