Annual Foam-Filled Event to Bring Fun, Suds

Fireman's Foam kicks off at 2 p.m. on Wednesday.

Starting at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, the athletic field at will receive its annual dousing of smiles, cheers, and foam.

The annual event welcomes Westwood families to join in a summer celebration, during which children can play and run around in a safe foam mixture that is provided by the .

"This does not happen without the Fire Department," said Mike Griffin, Manager of Fitness Programs for the , which coordinates the event. "Their continued support of this event year after year is an asset and we thank Chief (William) Scoble and his staff."

The foam used in the event is the equivalent of dishwashing soap, and kids are encouraged to wear goggles.

Anyone who plays with the foam will have the chance to hose down before heading home.

Parking near the school is limited due to the construction of the New . Participants are encouraged to carpool.

The event is free and open to everyone. A rain date for the event has been set for the same time and place on Wednesday, July 20th. But Griffin said the weather is looking more than ideal.

"Looking at the forecast, it is going to be another hot and dry day, so we may get even more kids than we have in years past," he said. "They come from all over the area and I know people that will drive an hour for this event, because they were participants when they were kids in Westwood."

Griffin, who grew up in Westwood, said he enjoys seeing so many families enjoy the event every year.

"What's fun is to see the kids truly be kids," Griffin said. "Growing up in this town and being a participant myself 25 years ago, it brings back great memories. When I look around and see people that grew up in town, but no longer live here and come back for this event, it speaks volumes how truly a great community event this has been and how appreciated it is by all that have participated."
