Boys’ Basketball Breaks Down in Medway
With Friday night's loss, Westwood finished its TVL season with a record of 5-13 and hosts a four-team tournament on Sunday and Monday to wrap up the year.
The Wolverines (5-13) played their hearts out in one of their toughest tests of the year, but ultimately fell 56-49 to the 17-1 Medway Mustangs on Medway's Senior Night Friday.
Westwood hung with the Tri-Valley League champs the entire game, but late mental mistakes gave Medway the eventual edge.
“We battled and played really hard, but we had some times where be broke down mentally,” said Westwood head coach Steve St. Martin. “When you play against a team like Medway, you can’t break down or else bad things happen really fast. You can’t give those teams in the upper echelon any room because they’ll take it, they’re just that good.”

Westwood trailed by two points at halftime and maintained the two-point deficit until minutes into the third, which is when St. Martin felt his team started to break down.
“We had some really great looks to start the third quarter but the ball just didn’t go in the basket," St. Martin said. "We missed those opportunities and then gave up points so it goes from a 2-point game to an eight-point game just like that and once you’re that far behind a team like that, it can get really ugly, fast.”

Medway opened up its lead to as many as 12, but the Wolverines didn’t stop battling and made a late fourth-quarter run. Joe Lally hit a runner with just over 30 seconds left to pull Westwood within five, the closest they had been in 12 minutes. Westwood failed to capitalize, however, as Medway missed the front end of a one and one and put back the rebound for an easy two.
“Again, those are the little things that we can’t do, especially against a team like Medway,” St. Martin said. “You want to take Medway and beat them in their home gym; you can’t give them any chances or they are going to capitalize.”
Macston Maccow carried the fourth-quarter load, scoring nine of Westwood’s 16 points and finishing with a team-high 16 while grabbing eight boards. Mike Keane was two points away from a double-double, finishing with eight points and 11 rebounds. Lally had nine points and Glenn Parsons and Jake Indursky each had six.
The Wolverines host a four-team tournament Sunday and Monday to wrap up their season and will play Marian first on Sunday night at 7:45.
