Girls Lax, Softball Advance, Boys Lax Done

Girls Lacrosse headlined a Thursday full of Wolverine tournament games with a 19-2 win against Norwood.

It was quite an eventful evening for Westwood athletics following the largest storm Massachusetts had seen in years the night before.

Girls’ lacrosse was postponed from Wednesday to Thursday due to the storm, and both boys’ lacrosse and softball played their regularly scheduled games Thursday.

Girls’ lacrosse had the only home game Thursday and put on quite a display, in the first round of the Division 1 South Tournament.

Westwood, which finished undefeated in the regular season, earned a bye in the preliminary round and was slated to play the winner of Norwood/Whitman-Hanson.

Kate Rich and Sarah Biron opened up the contest with a goal each less than a minute in, setting the tone in the first half.

The Wolverines added 11 more before the break, including three more from Biron and two more from Rich.

Westwood controlled the ball almost the entire half and allowed just two Mustang shots on goal and Westwood head coach Leslie Frank talked about how her team was able to maintain possession.

“Kate (Rich) is awesome on the draw and Sarah (Biron) picked off several on the circle and we work on that every day in practice and it pays off,” said Frank.

Westwood out-shot Norwood 19-2 in the half.

The Wolverines continued where they left off after intermission, scoring four goals within the first seven minutes and keeping the game at their pace.

Norwood snuck a goal past Mollie Brown however with five minutes into the half and tacked on another with a minute left past Meghan Raskin.

Laura McHoul added second-half hat trick for Westwood as part of her five-goal game. Biron finished with five as well and Kate Rich had three.

Westwood plays next on Friday evening against Walpole.

Meanwhile, the softball team won it’s preliminary-round matchup at Mashpee, 12-6.

EB Messenio pitched a complete game for the Wolverines allowing three earned runs and striking out six. Liz Loftus and Sheila O’Sullivan led the offense as they each went 2-3 with three RBI.

As for O’Sullivan, it was her first game back after sitting out for weeks with an injury. Molly O’Brien also continued to hit the ball well as she collected three hits and scored three times. Westwood will travel to Hanover for their next round matchup on Monday afternoon.

Finally, boys’ lacrosse ended their season in a rough way Thursday, as the team lost to the No. 3 seeded Cohasset, 14-1. Sean Condrick scored the only goal for Westwood late in the second half.
