Westwood Falls to Medfield, Defeats Latin Academy
Sunday's win puts the girls ice hockey squad at 10-3-1, and allowed the team to clinch a berth in the MIAA tournament.

It was an amped up weekend for the Westwood High School varsity girls ice hockey team.
During Saturday’s battle against Medfield, Nicole Riordan scored midway through the second period and goalie Mimi Borkan stopped 42 shots to lead Medfield to a 1-0 win vs Westwood. Westwood pounded Borkan all night but could not score, taking a tough loss.

On Sunday, however, freshman Taylor Sweeney scored her first two varsity goals and goaltender Siobhan Burke stopped nine Latin Academy shots to lead Westwood to a 5-0 win and a berth in the MIAA tournament.
Sweeney opened the scoring late in the first period on a long shot from the point, setup by passes from Ela Hazar and Kelly Healey. The game stayed at 1-0 into the third period, despite Westwood pouring shots on net in the first two periods.

Westwood broke the game open in the third period as Kim Egizi poked in a rebound of a shot by Ela Hazar to make it 2-0. Hazar and Healey combined on a nice give and go with a shot on net to setup Egizi in front. Olivia Fay then took a pass from Hazar and scored to make it 3-0.
Westwood continued to pile up the shots (48 total) and Sweeney scored her second of the game off a setup from senior Liz Stuehr to make it 4-0. Egizi then finished the scoring with her second of the game, setup by Hazar and Healey.
With several players out with injuries, Katie Horsfall and senior Gabby Guigliano along with juniors Meghan Kelly and Kristina Barounis really stepped up for Westwood.
With the win, Westwood improved to 10-3-1 and clinched a berth in the MIAA tournament. With six games still to play, Westwood has now scored 61 goals, the highest goal total ever for the team.
