Westwood Slugs Its Way Past Dover-Sherborn

Westwood (5-5) ended its four-game losing streak and jumped back up to .500 with an 11-7 home victory Monday afternoon against Dover-Sherborn (5-3).

The power surge was due mainly in part to an eight-run second inning where the home team sent 13 batters to the plate.

After a 1-2-3 first inning for the top of the Wolverine lineup, Chris Treon led off the second with a double, one of his two hits in the frame. Treon then crushed his first homer of the season in his next at bat almost to the exact same spot in left field.

“I was kind of struggling all year, and this game just kind of clicked,” Treon said. “I just watched the ball the whole way in, stayed back on it and took some for the ride.”

Glenn Parsons and Brendan Skehill each roped two-RBI triples to right-center in the inning and Brett Egizi notched two hits. Westwood had nine hits in the inning before knocking out D-S starter Walker Littlehale.

“We’re a good hitting team and that inning proved it,” said Westwood head coach Brian Whelan. “It’s just a matter of getting the right pitches and being selective to a certain degree. You try go get a fastball and he was throwing a lot of those.”

The Raiders battled back to score four in the top of the third off Will Smith and cut the deficit to 8-5 thanks to a single, two doubles and a Cole Tibbetts home run.

“We’re happy with the way our offense is playing right now but we still need to get a little more out of our pitching,” said D-S head coach Steve Ryan.

Whelan, along with the rest of the Wolverine coaching staff, said he felt an inning like that needs to be a shut-down inning in order to make a statement and not allow your opponent back into the game.

“You got to shut them down, especially with their 2-3-4 hitters coming up," Whelan said. "If you shut those guys down in an 8-1 game, you turn them back and they end they end up saying ‘it’s not my day’ and it’s only the third or fourth inning.”

Smith allowed just one more run through the sixth and helped out his own cause by blasting a two-run homer in the fifth off reliever Andrew Mamacos.

Smith picked up the victory, going six plus innings and striking out five, while allowing three earned runs. He was relieved by Brendan Skehill who shut the door on the Raiders in the seventh.

The Wolverines look to make it two straight Wednesday in Medway.
