Westwood Small Business Q&A: High Street Market

Find out what owner Liz Adams says about the market she's managed since 1995.

Westwood is home to a number of small businesses, and as such we thought we'd begin asking with store and restaurant owners on a weekly basis for some thoughts about what they do, what makes them unique and how they are faring in the economic climate.

This week we check in with Liz Adams, . Adams has manned the small grocery store since 1995, and continually works to make a unique shopping experience for each customer. to start selling beer and wine, which she hopes to do later this year.

Be sure to check back each week for a Question and Answer session with a new local business owner.

WP: How has the economy affected you in the past year?

LA: It's definitely affected us, because while people have to buy food, they might not come to a specialty market to buy it. With the construction at the new library, we get a lot of those guys in here for sandwiches.

WP: What is your busiest time of day and day of the week?

LA: Monday has become the new Saturday. I don't know if people want to cook on Monday versus the weekend, if they're going out. Kids are busy with sports. We do a lot of sandwiches on Saturday. On time of day, it usually depends. Lunchtime is always busy. We can get the dinner rush, too.

WP: What is your most popular item from the store or deli?

LA: Our most popular is probably the crab meat salad. They love it, they come from far and wide to get it.

WP: What do you feel is a benefit about being a small business in Westwood?

LA: The fact that we know our customers by name and by face. It just gives you that sense of belonging to a community. I just always feel good when I come to work.
