Westwood Students Register Impressive Scores on MCAS

Local students are well above the state average in all three categories - English, math and science.

The 2015 MCAS results are in and Westwood’s scores are well above state average when compared with other school districts. Below are the results for the 10th-grade tests in math, English, and science.

English: 98 percent of students scored either advanced or proficient on the exam, compared to the 91 percent state average. This year, 77 percent scored advance compared to 49 percent statewide. Only 2percent scored either failing or needs improvement. Statewide, 9 percent of students need to improve.

Math: 95 percent of students are proficient or better, again well above the state average of 79 percent, and 77 percent are advanced, compared to just 53 percent statewide. Only 5 percent in Westwood are failing or in need of improvement, compared to 21 percent statewide.

Science: Westwood continued its impressive results with 95 percent profieicient or better in science, with 53 percent advanced. Statewide, just 72 percent are proficient or better, and only 27 percent are advanced. Just 5 percent of Westwood students are failing or in need of improvement, while an alarming 28 percent of students statewide are in danger of failing.

The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 mandates that every student be proficient in English language arts and math by 2014. In Massachusetts, this proficiency is measured by the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS).
