Westwood Ultimate wins State Championship in Inaugural Season

Westwood Ultimate Frisbee team claims the Division III State Championship title in its first ever season.

On Sunday, May 31st, 11 of the best Division III teams from all over Massachusetts met at Fort Devens. Westwood entered the tournament as the top seed in Div. III, with its only loss in Division III against cross town rivals Xaverian with a score of 15-11. In the first game, Westwood cruised to a 13-2 victory over Middleborough thanks to JR Seely’s throwing. This represented a big improvement from their narrow 16-14 win over Middleborough in the regular season. Next up was Somerville, which Westwood defeated 8-4 thanks to strong offensive performances by Nick Draper and Patrick Sennott. Westwood then faced off against Xaverian. Utilizing a stifling man-to-man defense led by Trevor Brown, Westwood was able to hold Xaverian to only 5 scores whilst scoring 10. In the final game of the season, and the Championship Tournament, Westwood easily beat Harvard Ultimate 12-4 to win the championship, in its first ever season. Ian Moscaritolo propelled the team to victory with five receiving scores. Westwood finished the season with an overall record of 10 - 1 - 6; 8 - 1 in Div III.

The team made huge strides in its first year, and many of the players will continue with UltimateFrisbee. Among them are the 14 seniors who are planning on playing at schools such as Tufts, UMass Amherst, Brown and UC Berkeley. With 14 of 19 players and both captains, Ian Marten and Trevor Brown, graduating this year, Westwood Ultimate is looking for new players to fill its roster. Next season, Junior Ian Moscaritolo and Sophomore Jeremy Brown will be captains.

Westwood Ultimate would like to thank Sean Bevan, Brian Harrigan, Matthew Gillis, Brandon Price, Liam Kelly and the Westwood PTO for their help in launching a new sport here at Westwood High.
