Westwood Week in Review: July 19 – July 25

The Westwood Library project picked up a $4 million grant from the state earlier in the week, making it the first outside funding for the project. The library also released designs for the building that focuses on more technology and implementation of energy-efficient materials and policies.

While Westwood's youth certainly will enjoy the new library down the road, they had plenty of fun last week. They took in children's musician and comedian Rick Golden at the Westwood Summer Concert series Monday night. And on Wednesday, Westwood firefighters relieved kids and adults alike from the soaring heat by spraying cool-feeling bubbly foam on Wednesday.

Westwood's summer of music continued with a performance by WestwoodWinds and Two Old Friends on Wednesday.

One other group of kids made their summer better as the Westwood Little League team picked up a win in its first game Thursday in the sectional tournament. The District 3 champions combined for a two-hitter to beat Newton West.

In other baseball action, Post 320 staved off elimination three times in a week, defeating Franklin 16-9 on Monday, out-pounded Somerset 21-18 on Tuesday, and nipped Bridgewater 13-12 on a ninth-inning three-run homer Wednesday afternoon. But Westwood bowed out to Bridgewater Wednesday evening in the final.

While doors don't open for about another month, school districts in Massachusetts were in the news as the state chose to adopt national standards Wednesday, but that didn't faze Westwood school officials.

Meanwhile, high school seniors opted to improve their driving safety skills on how to manage emergency driving situations, a program free for the 2010 senior class.

Finally for Islington commuters, a new system by the MBTA called Parkmobile will allow commuters pay for parking online, instead of at the lot.
