Westwood Wins Big Against Needham

Seven-run first inning provides more than enough offense in shutout.

The Westwood 12A Little League team defeated Needham 7-0 Thursday night at Morrison Field.

Westwood batted around in the first and knocked in all of their seven runs in the inning. Brendan Gotti smacked a two-run line drive home run to left field, and Nick Giroux knocked in two with a bases loaded single.

From that point on, Needham starter Sam Fuly shut down the potent Westwood offense. He struck out three batters and didn't allow a single hit throughout the next three innings. He was relieved by T.J. Agnihotri, who pitched a scoreless fifth.

"Everyone wanted to hit the ball over the fence," said Westwood coach Dave Horsfall. "They saw how well they could hit when they were disciplined at the plate, I think they got complacent and stopped hitting disciplined."

The Westwood pitching complimented the hitting. Ned Murphy and Ryan McDonald allowed just a combined four hits and struck out five Needham hitters in the win.

"They pitched all spring but didn't get the chance to throw during the Williamsport tournament," said Horsfall. "We wanted to get them warmed up for our upcoming tournament in Sandwich as well as the Suburban League playoffs, and both were very solid, threw strikes, and had great defense behind them."
