Westwood Wraps Up Regular Season With Win

Nine-year-old team tunes up for Saturday's playoff opener with win over Needham.

Westwood's 9B summer league team finished its regular season schedule with a 4-3 win over visiting Needham Wednesday night at Morrison Field.

Both teams begin the playoffs this Saturday at times and locations that are yet to be determined.

"We have to take everything we've done the last few weeks and get a
win on Saturday," said Westwood coach Mark Morris. "We have to focus, not make errors, have great pitching, hitting, and we have to be physical."

Connor Powers got things started for Westwood right away against Needham, driving in Ryan Lewis to draw first blood in the bottom of the first.

Needham answered back in the second, driving in a pair of runs without a hit, the first on a bases loaded walk, the second with a hit batter.

Westwood took a 3-2 lead in the third on a Noah Heespelink sac fly, which scored two runners before a third was thrown out at the plate.

Braden Loughnane added an RBI single for Westwood in the fourth, and Needham's Ryan Supple drew a bases loaded walk in the fifth, again cutting the deficit to one.

Miles Heespelink shut the door for Westwood, leaving the bases loaded with Needham players in the top of the sixth.

"We hung in there and showed a lot of character," said Needham coach
Kevin McGovern. "They tried really hard, they just didn't come out on
top tonight"

Joey Barrett and Conor McGovern allowed a combined three earned
runs for Needham in the hard-luck loss.

For Westwood, Josh Morris, Connor Powers and Miles Heespelink each pitched two innings.
