Alleged Cop-Killer Was Arrested For Selling Cocaine To Minors

WEYMOUTH, MA — The man who allegedly killed a police officer with his own gun before fatally shooting a woman inside her home Sunday morning was arrested last year and charged with selling cocaine to minors.
Police said in an October arrest report that Lopes was known to them even then. He was arrested Oct. 3 and charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute to minors, possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, and resisting arrest.
Police on that night responded to the area of North Street and Wessagusset Road for a reported drug deal. Police found six people, all of whom appeared to be minors, in an abandoned home with alcohol nearby.

Lopes fled into a nearby wooded area. He was located about an hour later.
Police at the scene found cocaine and a digital scale inside a backpack owned by Lopes.

It is not known if or how that case was resolved or when Lopes was released. Lopes was described by police as being homeless.
Police said in the October arrest report obtained by The Patriot Ledger they had "fought with him before."

Lopes is currently in custody in a hospital after allegedly hitting Weymouth Police Officer Michael Chesna with a large rock, taking the officer's firearm, and shooting him in the head and chest, killing him. Lopes was then shot once in the leg by police before fleeing through backyards, where he allegedly fired off three more shots, killing a woman in her home.
Lopes was captured shortly after and transported to the hospital. His injuries are not considered life-threatening.
Lopes will be arraigned Monday on two counts of homicide, officials said.
