Congressman Lynch, State Senate Candidates Oppose Compression Station

Opposition continues to mount against the controversial proposed compression station from Spectra.

WEYMOUTH, MA - Congressman Stephen Lynch and both candidates for Weymouth's state Senate seat have come out against a controversial proposal to place a compressor station in North Weymouth.

Spectra Energy's plan for the station has drawn opposition from residents and elected officials.

“My opposition to the proposed compressor station in North Weymouth has not changed or diminished. I believe the area is too densely settled. It has a substantial residential population with a lot of young children. It is already over-burdened with heavy industry and I believe there are public safety concerns that have not been addressed. I plan to keep fighting for a workable solution,” Lynch said in a statement.

Democratic candidate for state Senate Joan Meschino has also declared her opposition for the project.

"As State Senator, I will fight tooth and nail against this project, because it is unsafe, unhealthy, and will adversely impact North Weymouth and the entire surrounding region, "Meschino said in a statement. "Situations like these require real leadership and a willingness to stand up to powerful interests who often come offering large sums of money. When residents are placed in danger's way and their home values plummet, there is no amount of mitigation that is acceptable. The South Shore should be coming together as a region to oppose this unnecessary project."

Weymouth Town Council President Patrick O'Connor, who is also running for state Senate as a Republican, told the Patriot Ledger he would continue to fight and that Weymouth could not be bought.

Recently, Spectra offered to give Weymouth $47 million in exchange for the town dropping their opposition. Mayor Robert Hedlund has not made a decision on the offer and the proposal has been met with vocal opposition.
