Cops: Weymouth Man Ran Red Light in Crash That Caused 'Life Threatening' Injuries

A 38-year-old Melrose woman suffered "life-threatening injuries" after a Weymouth man reportedly failed to stop for a red light and struck the woman's vehicle in Stoneham on Saturday morning, Nov. 9, according to Massachusetts State Police. 

Several witnesses said the 36-year-old Gareth J. Byrne was driving a 2005 GMC Sierra pickup and did not stop for a red light before he slammed into a car driven by the woman, according to a report on wcvb.com.

State Police identified the woman was injured as Diane Daniel, 38. She was driving a 2008 Toyota Camry. She was listed in critical condition at Massachusetts General Hospital as of Sunday at 1:45 p.m.

According to State Police, troopers responded to the intersection of Rt. 28 at South St. for a reported two-vehicle accident at  8:15 a.m. Multiple witnesses told the responding troopers that the Weymouth man may have failed to stop for a red light, striking the victim's vehicle in the intersection, sending it into a fence adjacent to the roadway.  

The Stoneham Fire Department pulled the victim out the car and she was transported by Stoneham EMS to Massachusetts General Hospital with life-threatening injuries.  

The investigation is currently ongoing with the assistance of troopers from the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and Crime Scene Services Section, according to the State Police.

The male driver is identified as Gareth J. Byrne, 36, of Weymouth.  He was driving a 2005 GMC Sierra pickup.  The female is identified as Diane Daniel, 38, of Melrose.  She was driving a 2008 Toyota Camry.
