South Shore Health System Partners with Local Police Agencies for National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day

South Weymouth, Mass., (Oct. 16, 2018) –In support of National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, held October 27, South Shore Health System has partnered with several local agencies including, Weymouth and Norwell Police Departments to provide safe, convenient and responsible means of disposing unwanted and expired medications.

We would like to encourage all patients, as well as their families and friends, to consider bringing their unused and unwanted medications to South Shore Hospital, Weymouth or Norwell Police Departments for appropriate disposal,” said Jason Tracy, MD, Chief of Emergency Medicine at South Shore Hospital. “A prescription drop-off program allows people to safely dispose of medications—keeping harmful substances, especially dangerous narcotics, both out of the hands of those who could abuse them and out of our environment.”

Throughout the year and open to the public at all times, South Shore Hospital has a medication drop box located inside the hospital’s 55 Fogg Road South Entrance – just adjacent to the Emergency Department entrance. Medicines can be dropped into the box anonymously. Both the Weymouth and Norwell Police Departments also have permanent drop-boxes in the lobby of their police stations and encourage residents and those from other towns to take advantage of the prescription drop-off program. Norwell Police will also be collecting unwanted medications on October 27, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. as part of the national event.Items allowed in the drop boxes include: Prescription medications, patches and ointments, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, sample medications and medications for pets.

Items NOT allowed in the drop boxes include: needles, Hydrogen Peroxide, inhalers, aerosol cans, lotions or liquids, thermometers.
